Your Cruising Classroom

"Sailing Still" is a Catalina 36' sloop-rigged, fiberglass, diesel auxilary sailboat that draws a 6' draft and a wide beam of 12'. The boat is 36 feet LOA, 7-tons displacement and has 50 gallon fresh water and fuel tanks. The Catalina 36 is a roomy crusing vessel with a private cabin center forward, and skippers quarters aft, under the cockpit. The wide beam and heavy keel make the boat stiff, and modern reefing gear allow sail to be reduced easily. The advantage of combining an easily driven hull with small reefed sails is that the strain is taken off the lines when new sailors are aboard for learning skills. This boat, when reefed down, still handles well, tacks easily and is fun to sail without a great deal of heeling or hard winching....however, if a show of speed under sail is desired...out come the reefs and away we go!

The cockpit seats six comfortably and has a fixed windscreen and bimini for those rainy days. The main cabin has the galley and dinette to port. The galley has a 2 burner plus oven propane stove, a large icebox, and numerous lockers and drawers (there's also a propane BBQ on the stern rail). The main cabin has a port and settees that converts to a private curtains double bed with storage for personal effects on either side. Forward to port is the head compartment with toilet, washbasin, and storage. On the starboard side is a hanging locker where the life vests are kept. Forward of this is the double vee berth with storage beneath.Skippers cabin is aft, under the cockpit.

Sailing Still carries safety equipment that exceeds the MOT requirement for a recreational vessel, personal flotation vests which you agree to wear while under way and in the dinghy. (Sailing Still)is a recreational boating school with Canadian Yachting Association and instructors operating under the Transport Canada Marine Safety Management System. As Sailing Still is not a passenger vessel, you agree to assist with vessel operation, follow the direction of the instructor and assist in the careful planning of each day's sailing, taking account of tides and weather, to avoid any hazardous conditions.
