include the Coast Guard

Basic Cruising Gulf Island Cruise and Learn
(Basic Cruising - Day Skipper)
This course offers not only five full days of on the
water training, practice and experience, but also offers students an
exciting vacation; and don't worry about those daily chores, we do all
the cooking and cleaning you just learn and relax, living the cruising
lifestyle in the beautiful, idyllic Gulf Islands. This course will
teach you boat handling under sail and power, navigation including
tides and currents, anchoring, seamanship and general boating safety.
Successful students will be awarded the CYA Basic Cruising
certification. We are now also including the Coast Guard Pleasure
Craft Operator's Card (PCOC) exam in this course.

Coastal
Navigation
GPS
is a wonderful accurate tool but when things go awry, not if...but
when; mariners must
have a tried and true technique to fall back on. Discover the art of coastal navigation.
Gain the skills and confidence to navigate safely within sight
of land using the navigator's basic tools: charts, compass
and navigational aids. Coastal Navigation forms a major part of
the Advanced Cruising certificate. Fees include text book, exercise manual,
chart and plotting instruments.

Intermediate
Cruising
(Coastal Skipper)
The minimum recommended certification for bareboat
chartering world wide. This 5 day liveaboard course (once
again we look after all the provisioning, cooking and cleaning)
emphasizes on the water, passage-making skills such as boat systems,
health and safety, auxiliary engines, provisioning, advanced anchoring
techniques, weather interpretation, navigation and cruising spinnaker
handling. Join us on 10 to 12 metre yachts for this confidence
building course.

Advanced
Cruising
(Advanced Coastal Skipper)
Seven
day cruising adventure incorporating overnight passages and
participation in the famous Swiftsure International Yacht Race. We
will be chartering a brand new Bavaria 34 for this course and will
be spending time on the west coast of Vancouver Island preparing the
crew for the race. While this course leads to
CYA certification the focus will be more on the development
and growth of the student and their gaining experience and knowledge
than on
certification.
Material covered
includes: advanced anchoring, advanced sail trim, night navigation and
passage planning, spinnaker handling, collision avoidance at
night,
watch keeping, advanced coastal meteorology and dealing with heavy
weather.

in Heavy Weather Seminar: An excellent 1/2
day seminar for those seeking to develop techniques and confidence
to safely handle heavy weather. Material covered will include
personal and boat preparation, sail handling and helms-manship on
the modern fin keel, spade rudder, moderate displacement sailboat.
A video presentation and guest speaker talking about personal
experiences in the Southern Ocean and Cape Horn will also be part of this seminar.

CYA
Instructor Clinics
For
experienced cruising sailors wishing to become certified as CYA
Cruising Instructors. Clinics are offered at the Basic, Intermediate
and Advanced level. The Intermediate and Advanced clinics will be less formal
and more collaborative in their approach than a Basic Instructor
clinic where teaching skills are introduced, critiqued and
developed. Please contact
the office for details such as prerequisites, etc.

We offer a 5% group discount to
groups of 2 or 10% for a maximum class size of 4 students.
Booking
and Cancellation
A 30% deposit is required to reserve a course.
Balance is due 30 days prior to departure. Cancellations will be
subject to a $50.00 cancellation fee. Bookings cancelled within 60
days from departure will receive no refund of deposit. Bookings
cancelled within 30 days of departure will receive no refund of
deposit or balance unless the spot can be filled.
