Canadian Yachting Association Certifications

Land's End Sailing School is proud to be a member school of the Canadian Yachting Association.  Our cruising courses lead to internationally recognized certification.  Here you will find a basic introduction to the CYA as well as an outline of the Learn to Cruise certifications from Basic Crew to Offshore.  For more information it's a great idea to visit the official CYA Website.  

The CYA is the national yachting authority which services and represents over 300 yacht clubs, 60 sailing associations and school, 150,000 racing enthusiasts and more than 1,000,000 recreational sailors across Canada

The CYA is a member of the International Sailing Schools Association (ISSA) and has been since 1985.  The ISSA is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of sailing instruction around the world.  As a member of the ISSA, all CYA courses and programs are recognized by other ISSA member countries.  France, Germany and Holland are some examples of member countries.  For a complete list of ISSA member countries please contact the CYA office.


Basic Crew Standard: 

Objective: 
To be able to act as a competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat yacht of 6-10 metres in length in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

                           - Rules of the Road

                           - Boat Handling Under Sail
                           - Seamanship:  anchoring, navigation, knots, tides & currents

Basic Cruising (Day Skipper) Standard:  

Objective:
To be able to cruise safely in familiar water as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6-10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Basic Keelboat Racing Standard:

Objective:
To be able to compete in a race with an understanding of the principle racing rules, protest procedures, and applying sailing and seamanship skills in winds up to 20 knots.

                           - Seamanship: crew overboard, onboard emergencies

Intermediate Cruising Coastal Skipper) Standard:

Objective:
To be able to cruise safely in familiar water as both skipper and crew of  a sailing yacht of 8-12 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering.

 Coastal Navigation Standard:

Objective:
To be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser in coastal or inland waters.  The standard is applied practically in the Advanced Cruising Standard

                           - Navigational Instruments
                           - Tides and Currents

 Advanced Navigation Standard:

Objective:
To be able to safely navigate a vessel in all conditions of visibility and weather in accordance with a prepared passage plan, applying the principles and techniques of safe navigation aided by electronic instruments and radar.

                           - Global Positioning System (GPS)

Advanced Cruising Standard:

Objective:
To be able to act as skipper and crew of a sailing cruiser of 8 -15 metres, operating by day and night in coastal or inland water in any weather.

Celestial Navigation Standard:

Objective:
To be able to demonstrate the celestial navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage.  The Standard is applied practically in the Offshore Cruising Standard.

                           - Determining Latitude
                           - Celestial Lines of Position
                           - Determination of Azimuths of Celestial Bodies
                           - Sun Sights
                           - Calculating Chronometer Error

Offshore Cruising Standard:

Objective:
To be able to safely act as skipper and crew in a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage requiring Celestial Navigation

Yachtmaster Cruising Awards:

The Yachtmaster Awards recognize individuals who have achieved CYA Cruising Standards and have completed considerable sea time.


Yachtmaster - Coastal:
Sea Time and Experience:
A minimum of two overnight passages as a skipper and two passages as skipper or navigator.  A minimum of 30 days and 1500 nautical miles of which 5 passages must exceed 60 nautical miles.

Yachtmaster - Ocean:
 Sea Time and Experience:
 A minimum of 50 days and 2500 nautical miles.  Passages specified must be  over 60 nautical miles minimum.  Applicants not holding the CYA Offshore  Standard must have experience of 100 days and 5000 miles with passages  being completed as skipper and exceeding 150 miles.
